Our Qualified Coaching Staff

Dan Bullock

In a long swimming career that took me from the Waltham Forest Swim Team to Millfield School and then onto Ohio University in the US, I had the good fortune to be trained by three coaches who all sent swimmers to the Olympics.

During my career I qualified as a finalist at the 1988 and 1992 British Olympic Trials and finished my competitive career as Conference Champion in the 500yards freestyle while studying in the U.S. 1998 saw me move to the sport of Triathlon in an attempt to get fit again.

Like many others I raised cash for charity and entered the London Triathlon not really sure what it was all about. First out of the water by 2 minutes and then 8th out of the first transition, after a great start it was downhill from this point, but I caught the bug! Slowly I got the hang of the sport and did some bike and running training and since then I have competed at the Europeans and Worlds as an Age Grouper, never finishing outside of the top 5 on the swim section. Now is the time to give some of that swimming experience back through these coached sessions.

Having started competitive swimming at the age of 7 with Walthamstow swimming club I soon progressed to Waltham Forest Swimming Squad. Training soon became a minimum of 14 hours pool training per week and extra time for flexibility and gym work. I competed in many competitions up to a national standard, which took me to different competitions in many countries.

Due to the years of swim training, I had a good understanding of the mechanics of swimming and I quickly progressed through my ASA preliminary and onto my ASA teachers certificates which allowed me to teach swimming. Having worked in a local pool for numerous years teaching ages ranging from babies to the 50plus classes I needed a new challenge and took the relevant American red cross teaching and life guarding qualifications and spent a summer teaching swimming to children and young adults in Florida. Having returned from my travels I was then asked to come and help teach these qualifications to Camp America candidates for the following summer. This I enjoyed immensely.

Maxine George-Tolonen

I learned to swim at the age of 8 and soon realized I had a talent for swimming. I started to swim competitively with Walthamstow Swimming Club and soon progressed to the Waltham Forest Swimming Squad where I was the first girl to break 60 seconds for the 100m freestyle in Waltham Forest Borough.

Countless early mornings and rigorous training schedules led to multiple runner-up positions at the English National Swimming Championships. I was chosen to swim for Great Britain and England Youth Squads at age 14 and competed at the Junior Europeans and numerous other international events. I specialized at the 200, 400m, and 800m front crawl as well the 100m and 200m butterfly.

Now that my competitive days are over I have a strong desire to pass my knowledge of swimming to others. I currently hold an ASA Level 2 Coaching certificate and I enjoy teaching others develop their swimming techniques at all levels, from the nervous beginner to the advanced professional.
